Wasserlos Castle

The origins of the current Schloss Wasserlos date back to 1790, when Prince Ludwig Eugen, a son of Duke Karl Alexander of Württemberg, had the building constructed on the remains of a former castle. Around 1800, Johann Gabriel Marquis von Chasteler de Courcelles expanded the estate with a garden, farm buildings, and a pavilion as a tea house. Between 1845 and 1868, the castle belonged to Ludovica des Bordes, née Brentano, known as Lulu, who restored the castle chapel in 1851, and her adopted daughter Meline. During the German War in 1866, the castle served as a military hospital. Baron von Mumm acquired the estate in 1901 and established agriculture there, producing wines, brandies, and operating a cattle and horse breeding operation. He was succeeded in 1916 by Wilhelm Weigang, who rebuilt the castle after World War I.
