Wehrden Castle

Hermann Werner von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht had the manor house built from 1696 by Ambrosius von Oelde on the remains of an older moated castle. The columned portal in the eleven-axis main facade is accessible via an open staircase. The delicately curved gable above the three central window axes dates from the 19th century. The projection on the manor house is constructed from assembled spolia. On the rear facade, two-axis, originally single-story corner pavilions with intersecting gabled roofs from the end of the 18th century have been extended. In the park stands a tower building, medieval in its core, which was redesigned in 1696. The battlements were later renewed. This so-called Drosteturm (Bailiff's Tower) was often used by the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff when she visited her aunt in Wehrden. Today, the complex is owned by the von Wolff-Metternich/von Köckritz family.
