In the municipality of Waizenkirchen in the Grieskirchen district of Upper Austria, Weidenholz Castle is a moated castle. Its uniqueness lies in the combination of historical building fabric and its current use as an educational institution, surrounded by a moat that hints at its original defensive function.

History+

The first documented mention of Weidenholz Castle dates back to 1125, when it was granted as a fief to Dietrich and Rudolf von Weidenholz, who in turn were vassals of the Schaunberger family. In 1276, the enfeoffment was confirmed by Hadamar von Starhemberg to Ulrich von Weydenholcz, with Weidenholz already being a sub-fief of the Starhembergs at that time. The Schaunbergers forced the return of the feudal sovereignty in 1331. After the extinction of the Weidenholz family in 1373, the heirs sold the moated castle to Duke Albrecht III in 1375.
