Weidmannsheil Castle in Saaldorf is a Neo-Gothic building. It once served as a hunting lodge and second residence for Prince Heinrich LXXII of Reuß-Ebersdorf.

History+

The forested area around Saaldorf had long been a hunting ground for the House of Reuß, which also maintained a game preserve here. Between 1834 and 1837, Prince Heinrich LXXII of Reuß-Ebersdorf commissioned the Gotha court architect Gustav von Eberhard to construct Weidmannsheil Castle. Built in the Neo-Gothic style, the hunting lodge also served as the prince's second residence. A visitor was the dancer Lola Montez in 1843.
