Weiherburg Castle, a late Gothic manor, is situated in Innsbruck-Hötting, directly adjacent to the Alpine Zoo. Its name derives from a former fish pond that existed until the early 20th century.

History+

Around 1460, Weiherburg Castle was built by Christian Tänzl, whose family had grown wealthy through silver mining in Schwaz. Following the relocation of the princely residence to Innsbruck in 1420, numerous such manors were established in the city's vicinity. Around 1480, Tänzl sold the castle to the Tyrolean sovereign Sigismund the Rich in Coin, before it passed into the possession of Emperor Maximilian I in 1493. Maximilian elevated Weiherburg to a noble manor. In 1560, Veit Langenmantel from Augsburg acquired the castle and had the fresco-decorated Langenmantel Hall added.
