Weikersdorf Castle

The first documented mention of the Lords of Weikersdorf dates back to 1233. In the mid-15th century, Hans Hager is named as the lord of Weikersdorf am Anger. Matthias Corvinus was also among its owners before the complex fell to the emperor after his death, who then assigned it to his forest master Kallenberg. Following the first Ottoman siege in 1529, it was converted into a Renaissance castle. The second siege in 1683 led to the destruction of all manorial records, necessitating the creation of new land registers by Franz Quarient in 1705 – these now represent an important historical source. From 1741 to 1966, the castle was owned by the Doblhoff family. In 1945, it was searched by the Soviet army, during which a church treasure hidden in 1683 was discovered.
