Weikersheim Castle

The origins of Weikersheim Castle date back to 1153, when the Lords of Wighartesheim were first mentioned in connection with a moated castle. The family name changed to Hohenlohe, but the castle remained a possession. A turning point occurred in 1586 when Count Wolfgang II of Hohenlohe-Langenburg inherited Weikersheim and made it his main residence. He began transforming the old castle into a Renaissance palace, largely completed by 1605. The Knights' Hall with its coffered ceiling dates from this era. After being plundered during the Thirty Years' War, construction continued from 1679 under Count Siegfried. From 1709, Count Carl Ludwig shaped the appearance of the castle and its park for over 50 years. After his death, the castle passed to other Hohenlohe lines, who used it only seasonally.
