Weilar Castle

The place is first mentioned in a document in 1153. In old charters and documents from that time, it is also called Wyler or Wylere. Weilar Castle stood on the site of the present-day palace. In 1153, a ministerial family Weilar was also mentioned for the first time. Ownership changed constantly, so Weilar belonged first to Hersfeld Monastery and later to Fulda Monastery. In 1498, the family name of the Boineburgs is first mentioned in connection with the place. Ludwig von Boineburg received fiefs in Weilar from Count Wilhelm von Henneberg. In the 18th century, the castle was converted into a palace. Remains of the castle are present in the masonry and in the outbuildings.

In 1945, the von Boineburg family was dispossessed and refugees were housed in the palace. Later, the complex served as a children's home and kindergarten, as well as a home for war invalids. Due to the changed roof construction in 1979, the palace lost its original appearance. Until 1999, the building was used as a retirement home. After the renovation, seniors are to move in here again.
