In Kefermarkt in Upper Austria's Mühlviertel region, Weinberg Castle stands on a ridge. Originally a medieval fortress, it was transformed into a Renaissance castle and now serves as a regional education and music center.

History+

The origins of Weinberg Castle date back to the 13th century, when the first castle complex was built on this site. The first documented mention occurred in 1305, when the Piber family was named as the feudal lords. In 1378, the Zelkinger family took over the property, expanding it through acquisitions. Under Christoph von Zelking, Kefermarkt was elevated to a market town in 1479, and the parish church was built in 1490. Emperor Maximilian I abolished feudal sovereignty in 1510, making Weinberg a free property. During the Peasants' War in 1626, the castle was captured by rebellious farmers.
