Weinfelden Castle

In 1180, the Counts of Kyburg were the owners of "Castrum Winveldem". Later, it belonged to the Dukes of Austria and the Lords of Bussnang. Apparently, this building had fallen into ruin, so that in 1431, one half of the property was sold to the city of Constance, and the other half to Bertold Vogt of Constance. During the Plappart War, he paid 2000 guilders to the Confederates to retain his share of the castle. After further owners from Constance, Weinfelden Castle came into the possession of the Lords of Muntprat from Salenstein (1519-1550), who reunited the entire property from 1542 onwards. In 1555, the castle was sold to the Fuggers from Augsburg. At the end of the 17th century, the city of Zurich bought Weinfelden Castle and its dominion to better support the Reformed in the subject territory of Thurgau. The Vogt therefore took up residence in the castle. In 1846, the castle was owned by a master carpenter from Wil, who had the roofs torn down and sold everything. In 1860, a saddler from Weinfelden had the roof repaired and an apartment installed. The chapel next to the castle was converted into a residential building and the moat was filled in. Afterwards, the castle changed hands more than twelve times. In 1973, it was acquired by the German industrialist Baron von Finck, who had it completely renovated in an elaborate restoration. In a renewed renovation in 1997, the interior was redesigned.
