Weinzierl Castle

The origins of Weinzierl Castle trace back to a manor belonging to St. Emmeram Abbey in Regensburg. Between 1578 and 1586, Johann Linsmayer Freiherr von Greiffenberg had the first castle built, which was later redesigned by his descendants. In 1741, under Johann Carl Weber von Fürnberg, the property underwent a Baroque transformation. Joseph Haydn worked here as a servant around 1755 or 1759. In 1796, the castle came into the possession of the imperial family and served as a summer residence for a time. Emperor Franz Joseph I ceded it in 1883 to the "Kaiser Franz Joseph Jugend Asyl Verein," which established a home for difficult-to-educate youth there. After the end of the monarchy, the city of Vienna became the owner. In 1934, the Ministry of Agriculture took over the castle and relocated the Francisco Josephinum from Mödling here.
