In the Weitersroda district of Hildburghausen in Thuringia stands Weitersroda Castle, a knight's castle from the 15th century. Its architecture, with medieval elements and later Renaissance extensions, gives it a castle-like character.

History+

The origins of Weitersroda Castle date back to 1478, when the western, three-story part of the current structure was built. In the late 17th century, the castle was integrated into a building project called “Henriettenthal,” undertaken on the occasion of the elevation of the House of Sachsen-Hildburghausen to ducal status. This project also included the current village church and a hunting lodge, of which only a Baroque pavilion remains today. In the 20th century, a western round tower collapsed and was not rebuilt. Since 2008, the castle has been privately owned and is used for an artistic-alternative residential project dedicated to preserving the building fabric and promoting cultural diversity.
