The Castle can be visited

In the town of Weitra in the Lower Austrian Waldviertel, Weitra Castle stands. Originally a medieval fortress, it was transformed into a Renaissance castle and is now a historical structure open to visitors.

History+

The origins of Weitra Castle date back to the years 1201 to 1208, when it was founded along with the town by Hadmar II. of Kuenring. The castle played a role in the conflicts between Heinrich V. of Kuenring and Rudolf I., after which the Kuenringers lost control. The complex was subjected to frequent sieges, including by the Hussites in 1426 and 1431, and by the Hungarians in 1486. In 1582, Rudolf II transferred the castle and the town to his chamberlain Wolf Rumpf, Baron von Wullroß. Through inheritance, the complex, which had been converted into a Renaissance castle at the end of the 16th century according to plans by Pietro Ferrabosco, came into the possession of the Counts of Fürstenberg in 1606.
