Wellenberg Castle (Frauenfeld)

The first documented mention by Walter von Wellenberg dates back to 1204. In revenge for the raids on their merchants, the people of Zurich, on behalf of Rudolf von Habsburg, destroyed the castle in 1258. Ulrich von Wellenberg was taken prisoner. Over the next 100 years, the rebuilt structure on the Wellenberg saw several owners and finally came into the possession of the Hohenlandenberg family around 1358, who also own the current Neuburg ruin complex. In 1512, the not-so-squeamish Mötteli von Rappenstein took over the lordship. Subsequently, the noble family von Ulm administered the property for more than 130 years. In 1669, Johannes Escher acquired the property on behalf of the city of Zurich, which in turn sold it on November 17, 1815. From then on, the seat was in private hands as a speculative object. On March 24, 1900, the siblings Nikolaus, Verena, and Louise Bienz sold the now established estate together with the castle to the Schenkel family. In 2002, the castle was placed under federal protection, and two years later, the Schloss Wellenberg Foundation was established as part of the "800 Years of Schloss Wellenberg" anniversary celebration.
