Welzenegg Castle is a Renaissance castle located in the eastern part of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, the capital of Carinthia. Originally designed as a moated castle, it has striking architecture and characteristic corner towers.

History+

The construction of Welzenegg Castle took place in 1575 by Viktor Welzer von Eberstein and his wife Elisabeth, née Khevenhüller. Three years later, in 1578, Welzer received official permission from Archduke Karl of Inner Austria to name the building after himself. In 1629, the castle, including its associated keep, changed hands when a descendant of the builder sold it to Alexius Frey. In 1671, Georg Nikolaus Graf von Rosenberg acquired the estate. Under Wolfgang Andreas Rosenberg, the castle underwent a Baroque transformation. It remained in the possession of the Orsini-Rosenberg family until 1983.
