Wendhausen Castle

The origins of Wendhausen Castle date back to the 14th century, when a moated castle stood on this site, first documented in 1328. This castle, part of a chain of lowland castles along the Schunter, initially served as a pawn object and was destroyed several times, including in 1552 by troops of Vollrad von Mansfeld and in 1602 after disputes between Duke Heinrich Julius and the city of Braunschweig. On the remains of this destroyed castle, Philipp Ludwig Probst, Chancellor of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, had the current moated castle built between 1683 and 1688. After his death in 1718, the castle passed to his granddaughter Ilsa Louise Stisser and later to her husband Konrad Detlev von Dehn, who undertook renovations and had a baroque garden laid out. From 1751, the castle belonged to Duke Karl I and subsequently served as a residence for tenants.
