Werenwag Castle, a structure with origins dating back to the High Middle Ages, is on a rocky spur in the Upper Danube Valley. It remains a private residence.

History+

The beginnings of Werenwag can be traced to around 1100, when a castle belonging to the noble free lords of First was erected on this site. The keep dates from the 12th century. In the late Middle Ages, the lords of Werenwag served as vassals to the Hohenbergers and Habsburgs, with Hugo von Werenwag gaining renown as a minnesinger. An Albrecht von Werenwag is mentioned in 1303. The complex formed the center of power for the lordship of Werenwag. In 1459, Marquard von Werenwag sold the castle site and the village of Ensisheim to Renhard von Melchingen. The Counts of Fürstenberg acquired the castle in 1629 but sold it in 1721 to the Barons of Ulm zu Erbach.
