In Wernsdorf, a district of Strullendorf in the Bamberg district of Bavaria, stands a historic building whose origins date back to the 12th century: Wernsdorf Castle. Today, it houses a private academy dedicated to early music and the art and cultural history of Europe.

History+

The oldest parts of Wernsdorf Castle date from the 12th century, though it is believed to have been built on the foundations of a Carolingian defensive structure from 790 AD. The castle was first documented around 1114, when the Bishop of Bamberg was named as its lord. In 1620, Prince-Bishop Johann Gottfried I von Aschhausen had the complex renovated, giving it its current form and subsequently serving as a hunting residence. At that time, the estate also included a hop garden and a brewery.
