In Herten-Westerholt, Westerholt Castle is a moated castle and a significant structure in the former Vest Recklinghausen. The complex, surrounded by moats, served for centuries as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Westerholt and today presents itself as a 19th-century castle built in the Classical style.

History+

As early as the mid-14th century, a fortified complex existed on this site, of which only the moats remain today. In 1359, Wessel von Westerholt handed over the then castle to the Archbishopric of Cologne as an open house and received it back as a fief. The complex was besieged and captured in 1583 during the Truchsessian War, but returned a year later to the troops of Elector Ernst of Bavaria. After its return, the defensive walls were razed, leading to a poor structural condition.
