Westerwinkel Castle, a Baroque moated castle in Münsterland, is located in the Ascheberg district of Herbern. It is one of the earliest Baroque castles in Westphalia.

History+

The origins of Westerwinkel date back to 1225, when a castle complex was documented. It is presumed that a fortified structure already existed around 1190, owned by Count Arnold von Altena-Isenberg. The von Merveldt family was enfeoffed with Westerwinkel in 1430. After financial difficulties and a temporary sale, the family regained possession of the castle in 1567 through marriage and inheritance, which they hold to this day. The social ascent of the Merveldts led to their elevation to Imperial Barons in 1668 and Imperial Counts in 1726.
