History+

The origins of Wewelsburg Castle date back to 1123, when Count Friedrich of Arnsberg had the first castle complex built on this site. However, after his death in 1124, it was destroyed by the local population. Later, the Counts of Waldeck and the Prince-Bishops of Paderborn owned castles here. The current castle was built between 1603 and 1609 in the Weser Renaissance style under Prince-Bishop Dietrich von Fürstenberg. In the 19th century, the castle became Prussian property, and in 1815, a lightning strike destroyed the north tower.
