Weyberhöfe Castle

Weyberhöfe Castle in Weiberhof near Sailauf dates back to the first of four hunting lodges built in the Spessart by the Electors of Mainz. It is located on the so-called Fürstenweg (Princes' Way) from Aschaffenburg towards Lohr am Main.

Werner von Eppstein built this hunting lodge "castrum vivarum" in 1265, where he died in 1284. It was probably a stone tower with outbuildings and a menagerie, as the name vivarum suggests. In the Margraves' War in 1552, it was burned down, as was Johannisburg Castle in Aschaffenburg. From 1557 to 1580, it was rebuilt under Elector Daniel Brendel von Homburg. Over the centuries, the spelling changed: "vivarum" became "vivar", "wiber" and finally "weyber" or "weiber". Stone-carved coats of arms commemorate the fact that the estate was the seat of the "Tithe Count of the Spessart" for decades. At the beginning of the 20th century, the estate was taken over and redesigned by the noble family von Cancrin. The agricultural estate was renovated from 1993 to 1995 and converted into a hotel complex with a restaurant.
