Northeast of the core town of Sankt Veit an der Glan in Carinthia, Austria, Weyer Castle, a former moated castle from the late 16th century, stands. Its architecture combines defensive castle elements with representative palace features.

History+

The origins of Weyer Castle date back to 1399, when a farmstead existed on this site. This later passed to the Schenken von Osterwitz and, after their extinction in 1478, to citizens from Sankt Veit. Around 1550, the Rülko family took over the estate. A transformation took place from 1585 under Anna von Liechtenstein, who commissioned master builder Christoph Steiner for renovations and extensions, completed by 1590. After several changes of ownership, including Hans Ladroner and the Bishop of Gurk, the castle belonged to St. Georgen am Längsee Abbey until 1783.
