Weyer Castle

The first fortification at this site was built at the beginning of the 13th century by the Rabensteiners, a family of ministeriales of the Eppensteiners. In the mid-13th century, the Counts of Pfannberg expanded the complex into a moated castle. Around 1400, Weichhardt von Weyer is mentioned as a ministeriale. After the Pfannbergers died out, the estate passed to the Counts of Cilli and later, in 1373, to the Counts of Montfort. In 1375, it was granted as a fief to Gebhard von Waldstein. After 1451, the property was divided between the Eibiswalders and the Ratmannsdorfers. Christof von Ratmannsdorf acquired further estates in 1489 and redeemed the second part of the property in 1502 to create a new family seat. Wilhelm von Ratmannsdorf, a Protestant, took over the castle in 1560 and shaped its current appearance. It remained in the possession of the Ratmannsdorfers until 1647, before passing to the Herberstein family through marriage. Sebastian Hayd zu Haydegg acquired it in 1659 and made it a fideicommissum.
