Wiesenburg Castle

To be privately owned

In Wiesenburg, a district of Wildenfels, stands Wiesenburg Castle. The complex was built around 1200 as a medieval castle and served as a strategic point to secure the Mulde bridge and as the center of the Wiesenburg lordship.

History+

The hilltop castle was first documented in 1251. In the 14th century, the complex was expanded. The bailiffs of Weida were the first known owners. In 1350, the castle passed to the Wettins, and from 1412 to 1591 to the von der Planitz family. A plundering by serfs occurred in 1523. After the Thirty Years' War, a reconstruction took place in 1664, creating the current inner courtyard and the octagonal gate tower. In 1724, the lordship passed to Augustus the Strong. A palas collapsed in 1803.
