Wiesensteig Castle

In 1434, a castle in Wiesensteig is mentioned for the first time. It was probably just a better residential building and served as the seat for the Lords of Wiesensteig, former Helfenstein vassals, who are traceable until the 15th century. In 1551, Count Ulrich XVII of Helfenstein laid the foundation stone for the castle, a wing of which still exists today. It served as the residence for the comital family until their extinction in 1627. In 1596, a pleasure garden in the Italian style was created near the castle. During the Fürstenberg and Bavarian periods, it served as an administrative seat. In 1806, Wiesensteig became part of Württemberg and, together with the towns of Neidlingen and Ochsenwang, formed an Oberamt. Its administration was established in the castle and existed until Wiesensteig's transfer to the newly formed Oberamt Geislingen in 1810. The castle, which had become superfluous thereafter, was sold and demolished except for the south wing. This wing served under various owners as a granary, later as a residential building, as a doctor's office, and temporarily as a post office.

From 1983 to 1986, the castle was saved from decay and renovated. Today it serves as a community center and cultural metropolis. Its premises offer a festive setting for conferences, family and company celebrations, exhibitions, and cultural events.
