In Forchheim, Bavaria, stands Wiesenthau Castle, a three-winged Renaissance complex with four corner towers dating from the mid-16th century.

History+

The first documented mention of Wiesenthau occurred in 1062. The Lords of Wiesenthau first appeared as Bamberger ministeriales in 1128. The existence of a castle at this site is documented since 1379. Originally the free property of the Lords of Wiesenthau, a part of the castle was sold to the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg in 1379, subsequently bringing the entire complex under Bamberg's feudal sovereignty. The Lords of Wiesenthau remained in possession of the castle as vassals.
