Wietersheim Castle

The origins of Wietersheim Castle date back to 1323, when the complex was built. It functioned as a manor and a commandery of the Order of St. John, until it was later sold to the Minden Cathedral Chapter. Due to its strategic location on the border between the Principality of Minden and the County of Schaumburg, the castle was involved in border disputes and was destroyed multiple times. Originally consisting of half-timbered buildings, the later built chapel was constructed in solid masonry. Around 1810, a reconstruction took place, resulting in today's compact octagonal building in the Neoclassical style. In the 19th century, Baron Carl von Schlotheim, district administrator of Minden and a road builder, lived at the castle.
