Wildenberg Castle

While Pürkwang is already mentioned in documents in the 8th century, the history of Wildenberg only begins with the construction of its castle. The original Wildenberg Castle stood two kilometers east of the present-day castle at the foot of the Brautlackerberg. Built around 1148, it fell victim to a fire as early as 1203/1204.

In 1271, Hänslinus Ebran von Lauterbach received the Hofmark Pürkwang as a fief through an exchange and feudal contract with Bishop Leo of Regensburg and, by adding nearby smaller Hofmarks and villages, created the larger Hofmark Wildenberg, which, with minor deviations, corresponds to today's municipal area. The existing Wildenberg Castle was built by Hänslinus Ebran von Lauterbach in 1272.

In 1462, Knight Hans Ebran von Wildenberg, out of gratitude for returning victorious and healthy from a war, first donated a bell for the old church and then initiated the new construction of the church in Pürkwang. For more than three centuries, the Ebrans, in over ten generations, exercised manorial rule over the Hofmark Wildenberg, until this knightly family died out with the death of Johann Heinrich Ebran. Stewards and administrative officials took his place.

During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish troops devastated the Hofmark in 1632. The war was followed by the plague. Until the secularization in 1803, the Hofmark remained in the possession of the Prince-Bishopric of Regensburg. With the second municipal edict of 1818, the municipality of Wildenberg was formed. Pürkwang and Wildenberg have grown together today.
