Wildenberg Castle (Zernez)

The castle's origins date back to the 13th century when its square tower was erected. In the 12th century, properties of the Lords of Tarasp and Frickingen were documented in Zernez, and in the 13th century, estates of the Lords of Sagogn-Wildenberg. The current castle emerged from one of these estates, which passed to the bishop in 1298 and to Conrad Planta in 1302. A branch of the Planta family later called themselves “von Planta-Wildenberg.” During the Bündner Wirren, Rudolf von Planta's residence was stormed and destroyed by the Engadine population in 1618. Rudolf von Planta forced the Engadine people to rebuild it with a new residential wing in 1622. After Rudolf's death, the castle passed to the Planta-Steinsberg family.
