Wildenfels Castle

Wildenfels Castle rises on a mountain spur above the town of Wildenfels near Zwickau in Saxony.

The construction of the feudal seat of the von Wildenfels family began before the year 1200. The oldest part of the complex is located at the western end of the hill. It formed the palas of a castle, but was later converted into a granary. The remaining buildings, which form the main part of the current castle, were built later. In front of them are economic, residential, and administrative buildings.

From 1602 to 1945, the castle was owned by the Counts of Solms-Wildenfels. They created the front part of the castle and had living and reception rooms furnished there in a later renovation. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists. Since then, parts have been rented out as living space.

Since 1990, the castle has undergone fundamental external restoration. Part of the buildings are used for public events, rehearsals, weddings, and continue to be used for living. The registered association Schloss Wildenfels manages the complex.

Unique worldwide are the silk wallpapers to be seen in the Blue Salon. They are almost 300 years old and still in their original condition. After extensive restoration, they have been shining in their old splendor again since February 2012.

The front and rear castle courtyards are accessible for viewing.
