In the municipality of Veltheim in the Swiss canton of Aargau, Wildenstein Castle stands on a rocky outcrop at the foot of the Veltheimerberg, not far from the western bank of the Aare.

History+

The origins of Wildenstein Castle are not precisely known. It was first documented in 1301 as an allod of the Schenken von Kasteln, before passing into the possession of the Lords of Rinach before 1307. Around 1350, the two defensive towers were built, and around 1400, the palas was constructed or expanded. After 1415, Henmann von Rinach received the castle as a male fief from the city of Bern. In 1491, the brothers Hans Albrecht and Hermann von Mülinen acquired the castle and its associated jurisdiction. From 1640, under Hans Thüring Effinger, the medieval castle underwent extensive conversion into a baroque residential palace. Franz Friedrich Effinger sold Wildenstein in 1720 to David Sprüngli, but the latter was forced to cede the castle to Bern at the behest of the Schenkenberg bailiff Johann Rudolf von Luternau.
