Wildenstein Castle

The origins of Wildenstein Castle date back to the late 13th century when it was built by the Lords of Eptingen on a fief from the Basel Cathedral Chapter. In 1293, Heinrich von Eptingen is mentioned as the first “of Wildenstein.” An early siege by Bernese and Solothurn forces in 1334, triggered by a breach of peace by the then-owner Gottfrid von Eptingen, shaped the castle's history. The earthquake of 1356 may also have caused damage. After several changes of ownership, including to the Teutonic Order and the Sevogel family, Wildenstein came into the possession of the city of Basel around 1500. The city then sold the castle with the condition that it be maintained and kept open to the city. Over the centuries, ownership changed frequently, with each new owner adapting the castle to their needs. Notable are extensive renovations in the 17th century under Theodor Brand, who secured the water supply, and in the 19th century under Peter Vischer-Sarasin, who remedied the neglected state of the property. Wildenstein Castle received its current appearance through a major reconstruction between 1902 and 1904. Since 1995, the canton of Basel-Landschaft has been the owner of the castle.
