Wildshut Castle is located in the village of Wildshut, part of the municipality of St. Pantaleon in Upper Austria. It is situated on a river terrace with a steep drop to the Salzach river and has a well-preserved old building fabric.

History+

The origins of Wildshut date back to the year 930. The first documented mention as "castrum Hutte" occurred in 1115 in connection with the lord of the castle, Albert de Hutte. By 1387, when the Lords of Wylczhut were mentioned, a castle already existed at the current location, serving as a hunting lodge for the Bavarian dukes and situated on the border with the Archdiocese of Salzburg. From 1402, it became the seat of the regional court in Weilhart, which was enfeoffed to the Nußdorfer family. Around 1500, the Bavarian dukes reacquired the castle and commissioned renovations, with administration handled by caretakers. In the 17th century, living conditions were so poor that the caretakers were permitted to perform their duties from their own castles.
