Wilhelmsburg Castle (Hilchenbach)

The origins of Wilhelmsburg Castle date back to 1365, when a document confirmed the existence of a fortified house on this site. From 1489, it served as a fief for the noble Wischel von Langenau family. In 1622, Count Wilhelm von Nassau-Siegen acquired the property and gave it its current name after a renovation in 1623. At that time, it was expanded as a moated castle. Further structural changes followed in 1683. A town fire in 1689 destroyed the castle along with a large part of Hilchenbach. Until 1976, Wilhelmsburg served as a court seat, most recently as the Hilchenbach District Court. In 1979, the city of Hilchenbach acquired the building from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
