Willmendingen Castle

The construction of Willmendingen Castle took place in 1609. The builder was Johann Jakob von Beck, who served as a bailiff in Klettgau, imperial notary, and state clerk of Vaduz, and who received the village of Willmendingen as a manorial fief in 1607 for his services. A later owner, the forest bailiff Franz Leopold Beck von und zu Willmendingen, unsuccessfully attempted to sell the estate to St. Blasien Abbey in 1698. In the early 19th century, the castle changed hands again: Franz Xaver von Beck sold it around 1801 or 1803 to Prince Josef II. von Schwarzenberg. The Princes of Schwarzenberg in Tiengen sold it to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1812. In 1920, the municipality of Schwerzen acquired the property, before it later passed into private ownership.
