Willroda Castle

The origins of Willroda Castle date back to the clearing period of the 11th century. It was first documented in 1204 as a stronghold of the Counts of Gleichen. In 1290, Count Heinrich von Gleichenstein sold the knight's estate to the Neuwerk Monastery in Erfurt. Over the centuries, the complex suffered destruction during the Thuringian Counts' War (1342–1346) and the Saxon Fratricidal War (1446–1451). From 1450, the estate was enfeoffed to the Erfurt patrician Claus Hildebrant von Willrode, who rebuilt it and fortified it with a high wall, rampart, and moat. His son Freidank von Willrode took over the fief in 1471 and had the fortified chapel and burial chapel expanded. In 1573, the heirs sold the estate to the Council of the City of Erfurt, creating a unique family legacy. After the conquest of Erfurt in the Thirty Years' War, Willroda fell to the Archbishop of Mainz in 1664. Under Mainz rule, it was used as a hunting lodge and is even said to have been visited by Goethe. After the Napoleonic Wars, Willroda became a Prussian chief forestry office and remained Prussian property until 1945. During the GDR era, the complex fell into disrepair, but after 1990, it was extensively renovated and now serves as a cultural center.
