Windeck Castle

Schloss Windegg is located at the outermost tip of Reichenau Island in Niederzell and was built in the 12th century as a monastic guesthouse. In 1417, Pope Martin V is said to have resided here temporarily after his election at the Council of Constance. In 1667, the castle was rebuilt. Today, the castle houses a recreational center and conference hotel.

Medieval Origins

The original 12th-century structure served as a testament to medieval monastic architecture, designed to accommodate distinguished guests. While much of this original structure has been altered, remnants of its foundational design can still be observed.

17th-Century Reconstruction

The rebuilding in 1667 introduced Baroque elements, typical of the era, while still respecting the castle's historical context. This reconstruction gave Schloss Windegg much of its current appearance, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Today, Schloss Windegg serves as a vibrant center for recreation and conferences. Its historic walls now host modern amenities, offering guests a unique blend of historical ambiance and contemporary comfort. It remains a significant landmark on Reichenau Island, attracting visitors from all over.
