Windhaag Old Castle

The origins of Windhaag Castle date back to 1664, when Joachim Enzmilner established a Dominican convent in the old Windhaag Castle. His daughter Eva Magdalena had already entered a Dominican convent in Tulln in 1648 and returned to Windhaag in 1664, being appointed the first prioress in 1668. The convent, intended to house twelve nuns, received official confirmation from Passau in 1673. After her father's death in 1678, Eva Magdalena inherited a large part of his property. She had the new Windhaag Castle, completed only in 1673, as well as parts of Pragtal Castle, demolished. From 1681, a new convent was built with the salvaged materials in the current town center of Windhaag, completed around 1689. The associated convent church was finished in 1691 and consecrated in 1693.
