Winklarn Castle, a historical structure, is today a landmark of the eponymous town. Originally conceived as an administrative seat, it is situated on an elevated position.

History+

The first written mention of the locality “Winchlorn” dates back to 1270. Winklarn developed into a closed Hofmark, which until the 19th century was subordinate to the Neunburg vorm Wald district court. In 1527, Emperor Charles V enfeoffed Hanns Fuchs, a member of the Franconian noble family Fuchs von Wallburg, with Winklarn. The Fuchs family subsequently built the castle, which for centuries served as the central judicial and administrative seat for the lordships of Winklarn, Reichenstein-Schönsee, and the Hofmark Frauenstein. In 1634, the possessions of Hans Friedrich Fuchs were confiscated because he refused to submit to re-Catholicization.
