Wocklum Castle (Balve)
Wocklum Castle is a moated castle in Balve, Sauerland. The complex in the Orle valley dates back to a Saxon rampart and a fiefdom of a certain Bernd von Düngelen.
In the first half of the 14th century, the noble family of Wockelheim (Wocklum) resided there. The castle also belonged to, among others, the former Droste Hermann von Hatzfeld, who distinguished himself as an opponent of the Reformation in the Truchsessian War.
Since its acquisition by the Landdrost Daniel Dietrich von Landsberg zu Erwitte († 1684) in 1656, the castle has been in the possession of this family. To protect the castle and its possessions, he founded a family fideicommissum in 1681. Another famous son of the family was Ignaz von Landsberg-Velen und Gemen, who had the Luisenhütte (Wocklum Hammer) expanded.
The Balve Optimum equestrian tournament regularly takes place there. Another major event is the Landpartie.
