Wörlitz Castle

Wörlitz Castle is one of the earliest Neoclassical castle buildings outside England. It is considered the foundational building of German Neoclassicism. The architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff built it between 1769 and 1773 for the newlywed princely couple. On the main floor, the vestibule, ten rooms, and two halls are grouped around the light court.

Since its completion in the 18th century, the rooms of the castle have been accessible to the public. The interior furnishings are very well preserved. They reflect the interests and travels (Grand Tour) of the prince. The furniture ensemble comes from the furniture workshop of Abraham and David Roentgen. Also noteworthy is the ceramic collection, preferably from the Wedgwood porcelain manufactory.

Inspired by his numerous stays abroad, the prince had several very progressive facilities for the time installed. For example, there are food lifts and doors that can be recessed into the walls. Furthermore, in the rooms below the princely couple's bedroom, there was a bathroom, which, however, is no longer preserved today.

Next to the castle, the kitchen and utility building was constructed between 1770 and 1772. Today, the kitchen building houses a restaurant and various shops.

The castle and the kitchen building are connected by an underground passage. Today, this passage is used to guide guests participating in a castle tour to the kitchen building.
