An expansive four-winged complex, Wolfenbüttel Castle, is one of the largest preserved castles in Lower Saxony. Originally built as a moated castle, it served as a residence for the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg.

History+

The origins of the current castle lie in a moated castle built in 1074 by Widekind von Wolfenbüttel at a ford across the Oker river. The strategic location on an important trade route made the settlement of Wulferisbuttle significant. After its destruction by Duke Albrecht I in 1255, it was rebuilt in 1283 under Duke Heinrich the Wondrous. Around 1350, the complex became the residence of the Welfs from Brunswick.
