Wolfenburg Castle (Kelsterbach)
The Wolfenburg (also: Kelsterbach Castle) is a former castle in the Hessian town of Kelsterbach. The stately building with its four corner towers was located north of the village, not far from the Main riverbank.
It was built between 1564 and 1580 by the owner of Kelsterbach, Count Wolfgang von Isenburg, in the Renaissance style. He had commissioned the master builder Georg Rubin for the construction of the castle.
During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was plundered and severely damaged in 1639. Not least because of the great financial outlay, the restoration of the building was abandoned and it slowly fell into disrepair. From 1789, part of the Kelsterbach porcelain manufactory was located in the cellar of the ruin. Finally, in 1809, the wine merchant and later mayor Georg Schenk acquired the site and built a neoclassical town villa over the former castle cellar.
