Wolfgang Castle (Hanau)

Wolfgang Hunting Lodge was constructed in 1715 under Johann Reinhard III., the last Count of Hanau. It was erected in proximity to the remains of the medieval St. Wolfgang Monastery. Originally conceived as a hunting residence, the building presented itself as a two-story Baroque structure with six axes, its half-timbered framework plastered and topped by a mansard roof. The historic staircase is still preserved today. Following the Prussian annexation of the Electorate of Hesse and Hanau in 1866, the forest administration was reorganized. Since 1868, the castle has served as an administrative building for a chief forestry office, today's Hessian Forestry Office Wolfgang.
