The castle's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when a manor house existed on this site. Around 1531, a new building was constructed in the Renaissance style, laying the foundation for its current appearance. Wolfsberg Castle underwent changes, particularly in the 17th and 19th centuries, when the characteristic towers were added. For long periods, from the 13th century onwards, it repeatedly belonged to Göttweig Abbey, while from the 15th to the 17th century it was mainly owned by the Edler von Geyer family. During the First World War, it served as a refuge for Galician refugees.
