Wolfshagen Castle

The castle's origins date back to 1147, when the Gans Edle Herren zu Putlitz family brought the Stepenitz region under their control and erected a moated castle. Remains of vaults from this original structure are still preserved in the west wing of the current castle. Around 1590, the castle was expanded into a four-winged Renaissance castle with ramparts, which, however, fell into disrepair after the Thirty Years' War. Between 1771 and 1787, a late Baroque two-winged complex was built on the old foundations under Albrecht Gottlob Gans Edler Herr zu Putlitz. From this period date painted canvas wallpapers and illusionistic wall and ceiling paintings, including grisaille paintings in the Second Prince's Room based on motifs by Daniel Chodowiecki. The decoration of the garden hall with allegorical representations of Frederick the Great also made Wolfshagen one of Prussia's earliest Frederick monuments, although these paintings were largely destroyed in 1952. In the mid-19th century, Peter Joseph Lenné designed a landscape park. In 1911, Hans Albrecht zu Putlitz had the facade redesigned in Neo-Baroque style and an altan added.
