Wolfstein Castle is in Freyung in the Bavarian Forest. Originally conceived as a fortified castle, it evolved into a structure and is now a cultural highlight in the region.

History+

The origins of Wolfstein Castle date back to around 1200, when Bishop Wolfger von Erla of Passau initiated the construction of a castle. This occurred on land that Emperor Henry VI had ceded to the Passau bishops in 1193. In 1301, the locality "Purchstol zu Wolferstein," later Freyung, was first documented. The castle served as a military fortification, administrative center, and episcopal hunting lodge. Following the dissolution of the Prince-Bishopric of Passau in 1803, Wolfstein initially fell to Austria, before being annexed to the Kingdom of Bavaria three years later, as a result of the Peace of Pressburg.
