Wolfurt Castle

Wolfurt Castle was first documented between 1217 and 1226. In 1402, Mehrerau Abbey acquired half of the complex, which then served as a summer residence for the abbots. By the mid-15th century, Wolfurt became princely and fell to Austria in 1451. It was subsequently granted as a fief to various Bregenz patrician families, including the Kaisermanns and the Leber von Wolfurt. In 1530, Abbot Germann Kilian of St. Gallen Abbey purchased the castle and used it as a refuge, followed by Abbot Diethelm Blarer. After the fief reverted to the territorial lords, Johann Wilhelm Marius took over the castle in 1653, and in 1696, Benedikt Reichart was enfeoffed, initiating a Baroque renovation of the interior around 1707.
