Wolkenburg Castle

The origins of Wolkenburg Castle likely date back to the late 12th century, when it was built as a fortress with an oval footprint of approximately 70 by 50 meters. During the Middle Ages, the lords of the castle changed frequently, including Kunz von Kauffungen in the 15th century. In 1627, the von Einsiedel family acquired the property and remained its owners until the end of World War II. Between 1694 and 1700, a reconstruction transformed it into the present castle complex, with the forecourt redesigned into a Renaissance garden. Later structural changes between 1760 and 1810 under Detlev Carl Graf von Einsiedel led to the redesign of the castle park in the English style, complemented by Lauchhammer iron art castings. After its expropriation in 1945, the castle initially served residential purposes.
